Spaghetto Sauce
Ingredients
2 cans diced tomatoes
1 can whole tomatoes
2 (6 oz) cans tomato paste
1 onion
4 cloves of garlic
2 tbs olive oil
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
2 tbs oregano
2 tbs basil
1 pound ground beef
soy sauce
rice wine
garlic powder
black pepper
corn starch
1 egg
heat olive oil in a large sauce pan and saute half of a chopped onion and minced garlic until tender. don't over cook the garlic or else it will turn bitter. when that's done, dump in the tomatoes, tomato paste, red pepper flakes, oregano, basil, and sugar. let this simmer for at least 2 hours.
okay, go watch 3 episodes of how i met your mother.
no seriously, do it.
done? alright, you're awesome.
in a large bowl, combine the ground beef, soy sauce, rice wine, garlic powder, black pepper, and corn starch. then add the rest of the chopped onions and the egg. mix it with your hands so its consistent or whatever. mold your meatballs and place them on a plate. on medium high heat in a pan, thoroughly cook the meatballs. add the meatballs in the sauce and finish the simmer.
Notes:
this is my first attempt to making spaghetti sauce. it came out really thick and tomato-y flavored. to quote my housemate and the strokes, the sauce was "lacking in depth" and i'll have to agree with him and jules casablancas.
i based the recipe off http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Spaghetti-Sauce-II/Detail.aspx
next time, i would add another 1/2 pound or a full pound of loose beef. brown the meat in a pan, then add it in when you add the tomatoes in the sauce. also, if you feel extravagant, put a half of a bell pepper, heel of a slab of parmesan, and perhaps a little butter.
also, you can substitute some sugar with a little bit of ketchup.
